As our guest in the Gastein Valley, you are of course invited to celebrate the traditional festivals that go hand in hand with the liturgical year and the change of seasons, together with the local inhabitants. Particular highlights of these events are the days around the summer solstice, when hundreds of fire are lit on the peaks and slopes and the rural autumn celebrations with harvest festivals and the legendary driving down of cattle from the mountain pastures. Folkloric evenings and concerts of the spa orchestra are also elements of social life. Here you will experience home-grown customs firmly rooted in the hearts and minds of local residents – in marked contrast to folkloric events solely organized for tourism. Castle Ruin Klammstein: In the restored tower of the oldest historic example of architecture in the Gastein Valley, you can admire numerous exhibits bearing testimony to the history of the castle. Upon reservation, you can enjoy a knight's meal. |
The Catholic Church "Zu unserer Lieben Frau" (church of “Our Dear Lady”) in Bad Hofgastein, which was first mentioned in 894, is the most famous Gothic mountain church in the province of Salzburg.
Museum of Local History - Gastein: Here you will learn many interesting facts about the valley’s history, culture and traditions. Annually changing special exhibitions deal with particular topics.
The Mining Museum Böckstein takes you into the history of mining in the Gastein Valley. Among other interesting exhibits you can see a replica of an ore-dressing plant.
At this point we would like to recommend two impressive natural spectacles warmly to you:
Natural Cave “Entrische Kirche” (= eerie church) in Dorfgastein: The visit to this cave with its fascinating stalactites and sinter formations is a very special experience. You can join a guided tour from Palm Sunday until early October. The name "Entrische Kirche" reminds of the persecution of Protestants during the times of Counter-Reformation when secret Protestant services were held here.
The world famous picturesque Gastein Waterfall is lit in the evening – this characteristic landmark of Bad Gastein is located right in the centre of the town.
Here you can find some worthwhile places of interest in the Province of Salzburg.
